Despite a leadership change and cabinet reshuffle the Baird Government remains determined to destroy what remains of the historic Millers Point housing community. Although a number of residents have now been relocated many vulnerable residents remain. For some elderly residents the prospect of having to adjust to a new home and find new social support and healthcare services is too stressful to contemplate. The campaign continues to allow these residents to age in place.
Previously the community of Millers Point has been recognised as living heritage community. For many residents several generations of their families have lived in the former wharf workers cottages and surrounds. The community provided a link to Sydney’s colonial history.
As part of this sell off the Government plans to sell the purpose built Sirius apartment building in its entirety. Residents have been told they have only months to move before the building will be knocked down and replaced by luxury apartments. Sirius is a unique example of the Brutalist school of architecture and must be saved. The building has been nominated for inclusion on the State Heritage Register, however, the final decision rests with the NSW Environment Minister.
The Baird Government has committed to spending the proceeds of the sale on building new housing stock. However, it appears they are determined to build this new housing in far western Sydney. Moving inner city public housing tenants to the fringes of the metropolitan area isn’t the answer.
While I support the creation of new public housing stock the Government needs to create more right across Sydney, especially in inner-city areas where there is better public transport, health services and employment access. The Macquarie Fields riots of 2005 sent a strong message that moving large public housing estates on the suburban fringes is poor social policy.
