I have attended a number of community meetings recently and witnessed the widespread anxiety amongst the community around the Baird Government’s proposed relocations. Plans for the Waterloo Metro station and precinct redevelopment will require the relocation of Waterloo Housing residents as the site is rebuilt.
The distrust amongst the community shows their relationship with the Baird Government is at an all-time low. At a recent community meeting with Minister Brad Hazzard, tenants were promised a right of return once the housing stock is rebuilt. However, we know from previous public housing redevelopments that the number of tenants returned to a community can be as low as 20%.
