The Living in Harmony festival celebrates cultural diversity across our City. I was lucky enough to be a part of the Breaking Bread event on the 10th March where a diverse group of speakers talked about the adversity they had faced prior to calling Australia home.
Aunty Mille Ingram, Aboriginal elder, Marjid Rabet, Iranian refugee, Dalia Ayalon Sinclair, National Council of Jewish Women (NSW) and Rev Dorothy McRae-McMahon from the Uniting Church all told heartbreaking stories of dispossession, racism and revealed how they had built bridges in their new communities. It was striking that, despite the varied backgrounds of these speakers, their experiences were remarkably similar.
I hope that by connecting with these experiences people can begin to understand our common humanity. You can check out other events at the festival here: https://whatson.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/programs/living-in-harmony-festival
