We have just learned that the City of Sydney will not be forced to merge with another council under the Fit for the Future reforms. I welcome the Premier’s recognition of the City as a forward thinking sustainable Council.
For my other Greens colleagues in Council’s across NSW the story has been very different. A large number of Councils will now likely be forced to amalgamate. The process will feature some form of public consultation, however, we are waiting on further details. The campaign to save Councils has demonstrated that the financial stability of local government has no relation to the population size of a council. Weakened local representation will surely open the way for less scrutiny over developments across our suburbs.
My Greens colleage David Shoebridge MLC will continue The Greens campaign against forced amalgamations. You can find more information on his website here: http://davidshoebridge.org.au/
