The Pitt Street Mall Activation Program was put to Council during Committees, as a measure to encourage people to visit the area. This will focus on creating ‘experiences’ for shoppers using events and performances to revitalise public engagement. This is amidst a time of disruption to the city, as we are in the swing of construction works to allow the light rail to come into town.
Whilst I welcome this program’s intentions to assist the City during this time of difficulty, I question why this activation area is concentrated around the Westfield Shopping block. Independent retailers across George Street are surely more in need of the City’s assistance during this disruption, and yet Westfield is the first to secure an activation program.
The Lord Mayor confirmed after questioning that George Street will receive similar assistance, however I am critical of why Pitt Street was prioritised. The City must do what it can to keep independent retailors afloat, and I will urge the City to put this plan to action.
