The proposal for a retractable urinal has been on City’s agenda for some years now. It first gained traction in the previous Council (2008-2012) when late night public urination was becoming a significant problem in the CBD and Kings Cross area. Since the introduction of the lockouts this problem has shifted and I don’t believe it is a good or equitable use of public money.
Initially the City selected Springfield Plaza as the site for the urinal but after strong opposition from locals there has been a re-think on the future of the plaza. Instead the City has now nominated a site at the intersection of Liverpool and Oxford Streets. The urinal sits below ground and is only raised overnight during peak periods such as weekends or public holidays.
While I support the City working to address the problem of public urination and, more broadly, the City’s Public Toilet Strategy, I remain unconvinced that this project will provide a sustainable solution.
