The City has given $10 000 for a feasibility study into the restoration of Redfern’s 40,000 Years Aboriginal Community Mural. Sitting at Lawson Street opposite to Redfern Station, the mural represents the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia. The mural has been an important and much loved landmark for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community for over 30 years.
The Redfern Station Community Group has plans for the original artist Carol Ruff to be engaged in the restoration.
I am really pleased that the City has taken this important first step in restoring this community icon. There is still more work to do before the restoration is realised and I hope the City will continue to support the project into the future. I would like to recognise the efforts of the community activists who are working to preserve this significant public artwork.
