It is with great sadness that I acknowledge the passing of friend and Indigenous activist Ray Jackson. Ray passed away unexpectedly late last week. I was lucky enough to share a stage with Ray on many occasions at rallies for a range of important causes including refugee rights and wikileaks. Ray was a recipient of the French Human Rights award, for his tireless work for human rights.
Ray was best known for his activism on Aboriginal deaths in custody. He has worked to give prominence to this issue and the shocking statistics in Australian law enforcement that tell a scandalous story about racism in Australia. At the 40th Anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy Ray was part of the team that convened the inaugural national group to protest Aboriginal deaths in custody.
I send my condolences to Rays family and friends. He will be greatly missed in Redfern and amongst our activist community.
