I’m thrilled to see Council taking another step closer to establishing such a fantastic and beneficial project. With the forthcoming challenges of food security and sustainability it is vital that projects like this are there to educate urbanites about food production.
Located in Sydney Park, the City Farm is set to become a community focal point with abundant learning and development opportunities for residents of all ages. In addition to the education and employment the farm will provide it is also estimated to generate up to 4.5 tonnes of fresh food per year. The site will also be used as a farmers market, improving community access to healthy food.
Given the success of the City of Sydney and Marrickville Council’s joint project, the Green Living Centre, it is clear that there is strong interest in food, farming and sustainability in the community. As part of the plan the City hopes that the farm will eventually be run by the community.
I would like to congratulate the City staff on progressing this matter and I look forward to seeing this vision become a reality.
