On Sunday 27th July I joined with close to 1000 others to voice my condemnation at the attack on Palestinian civilians by the Israeli Defence Force. Over 1000 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 6000 injured and still the violence continues. The IDF’s shelling of civilian homes, schools and hospitals exposes Israel’s flimsy defence that civilians were used by Hamas as a human shield.
The community anger over these war crimes sits in stark contracts to Prime Minister Abbott’s approval of Israel’s behaviour in this recent outbreak stating, “We recognise Israel’s right to self-defense and we deplore the firing of rockets from Gaza into Israel”. This the Federal Government’s earlier move to re-classify occupied territory in East Jerusalem as ‘disputed,’ further legitimising Israel’s take over of Palestinian land.
This week a joint statement has been issued by 30 Federal and NSW Members of Parliament expressing their condemnation of Israel’s military bombardment and invasion of Gaza. I am pleased to say that all of my Greens colleagues in NSW and Federal Parliament are signatories to this statement which calls on the Australia Government to support a ceasefire deal which includes an end to Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories and to the blockade of Gaza.
