With so much of Australia’s population living in cities the contribution that urban environments can make to overall sustainability is large, which is why I am proud of the City of Sydney’s environmental efforts.  I was also proud to represent the City last week at the launch of Keep Australia Beautiful’s Sustainable Cities Awards, a program that recognises innovation by Councils across the country in the field of sustainability.

Last year Penrith City Council was the overall NSW winner for engaging in a large scale water recycling project, diverting significant quantities of green waste from land fill to compost and for engaging young people in sustainability programs, all actions that I’ve pushed to support here at City of Sydney.  I’m therefore very keen to see what Councils across the country come up with for this year’s awards  and will look forward to doing all I can to make sure Sydney is a serious contender.
