Progressive politics in local government

For all I the complaints I may have listed here over the years about events on City of Sydney Council I feel that we have been lucky that it has, overall, been a rather progressive and good natured Council.  Sadly, that may all change this weekend, with the new set of Liberal candidates taking a hardline attitude against environmental projects and the business focused Living Sydney promising a range of costly and unworkable schemes like removing bus lanes from the City and charging cyclists a registration fee.

Last Friday I spoke at the regular Politics in the Pub event about the topic of the past and future of progressive local government in Sydney. It was a great evening with a receptive audience and my thoughts on the matters, as expressed on the night, can be found here.
