Vale Chicka Dixon

On the afternoon of Saturday 20th of March, Charles “Chicka” Dixon passed away at the age of 81 after a long battle with asbestosis. Chicka was a figure of great importance to Aboriginal people Australia wide for his decades of tireless work put into fighting for Aboriginal rights and improved living conditions. He was a driving force in campaigning for the 1967 referendum on granting citizenship to Aboriginal Australians and one of the founders of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra. Chicka made significant contributions to the Redfern community through his role in establishing the Aboriginal Legal Service and Aboriginal Medical Service. He was also a founder of the Aboriginal Arts Board and the first Aboriginal member of the Australia Council. His fighting spirit and the immense positive changes his work bought to the lives of Aboriginal Australians will be remembered by all of us who continue to fight for a better deal for the first people of our nation.
